Residents of Raleigh Hills are fortunate to live in an area where the economy is thriving and the job market is just as booming. While agriculture remains one of the largest industries in the county, along with lumber, food processing and manufacturing, the electronics and technological industries also serves as major economic strongholds. Washington County is home to several well-known companies, including Nike, Columbia Sportswear, IBM's Linux Technology Centers, Leupold & Stevens, and Reser's Fine Foods.
Raleigh Hills is one of 62 census-designated places and/or unincorporated communities in Washington County, which in turn is one of 36 counties in Oregon. The city of Hillsboro serves as the county seat. The county is home to approximately 530,000 residents, making it the second most populace county in Oregon. Originally called Twality and then renamed after the first President of the United States in 1849, Washington County is home to 43 historic buildings, structures, and sites of historical significance on the National Register of Historic Places.
Many recreational areas can be found throughout the county as well, such as the L.L. "Stub" Stewart State Park. L.L. "Stub" Stewart State Park sets on 1,654 acres of land near Buxton, OR and features horseback riding and hiking trails, RV sites, campsites, cabins, canyons and forests. The park also connects to the Banks-Vermonia State Trail. If you are an experienced and well-prepared hiker, Ki-a-Kuts Falls is considered one of Washington County's best kept secrets, probably due to its out-of-the-way location. Discovered by a group of hikers that were hiking along the Tualatin River in 1993, Ki-a-Kuts Falls (named after the final Native American chief of the Atfalati tribe) is a 40-foot waterfall that travels down a narrow channel over basalt cliffs and into a pool of water below. It also happens to be the only waterfall in the county, and one of two in Northwest Oregon with the other being Youngs River Falls.
Part of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge is also located in Washington County. Wetlands, grassland, and forested areas can be found in the refuge, along with a recently opened visitors' center complete with exhibits and other information about the refuge and its wildlife inhabitants. Over 200 birds, 50 different types of mammals, and 25 amphibians and reptiles call the refuge home.
